Great episode! Arianna Huffington is an amazing woman. I think a lot of what helped her turn Huffington Post into what it is — a keen understanding of her Mental Model. A lot of people in “traditional media” scoffed at what she set out to do, but in the end, she realized what the business is supposed to be about and she’s now a force to be reckoned with in media.
Loved the discussion around sleep. It’s an important topic for Arianna as she ended-up collapsing from exhaustion at one point, so she decided to make a commitment to understand the value of proper sleep. I, too, am trying to find my commitment to sleep. Recently, I read The One Thing by Gary Keller. In the book, Gary says that when you make the connection that getting to bed on time and getting proper sleep is closely related to success, things will start to click much easier for you. I believe that. I’m trying. By the way, read The One Thing if you haven’t already done so. Game changer.
Gary says he gets 6-8 per night. I think most people are surprised by this as Gary seems to be, as he says, “a machine.”
Arianna had an interesting tip — if you don’t get proper sleep on a given night, the next day, find time to get a 20 minute nap in. It will do wonders for you. I like this idea. It’s simple and do-able. I might take a nap after writing this post.
The “transition to sleep” is Arianna’s biggest tip. By this she means, that you have to give your brain a “wind down” period. She believes that, today, we’ve “lost the transition” and it’s impacting the quality of our sleep. Not good.
